Migrating an SEO plugin scares people — for good reason. Meta titles get overwritten, redirects get dropped, sitemaps regenerate with new URLs. Done wrong, a migration erases a decade of rankings in a weekend. Done right, it's a one-hour job.
- Never uninstall the old plugin before importing.
- Migrate in five staged batches: meta → schema → redirects → sitemap → cleanup.
- Freeze publishing for the migration window.
- Keep the old plugin installed but deactivated for 30 days as a rollback path.
Pre-flight checklist
- Full database backup (not just files).
- Export of Rank Math redirects to CSV.
- Export of current sitemap URLs.
- Snapshot of Search Console impressions/clicks (7 days).
- Staging environment ready.
- Publishing freeze scheduled with the editorial team.
The five migration stages
- Stage 1 — Meta
Import titles, descriptions, canonical, robots directives. Verify a random 20 URLs before continuing.
- Stage 2 — Schema
Map Rank Math schema types to WBP equivalents. Resolve conflicts (see our schema-conflicts guide).
- Stage 3 — Redirects
Import the CSV. Verify 30x chains resolve in one hop.
- Stage 4 — Sitemap
Generate the WBP sitemap. Diff against the exported Rank Math list — investigate every missing URL.
- Stage 5 — Cleanup
Deactivate (do not delete) Rank Math. Monitor Search Console for 30 days. Delete on day 31.

Keep it deactivated for at least 30 days. If Search Console shows an impressions drop, reactivate as an instant rollback while you diagnose.
Common gotchas — and fixes
- Rank Math stores canonicals as empty strings when self-referential. Don't overwrite with the URL — preserve the empty value.
- Schema blocks with @id collisions must be renamed on import.
- Redirect loops appear when Rank Math + WBP both handle the same source. Disable Rank Math redirects immediately after import.
- Sitemap URLs including query params should be excluded — WBP canonicalizes at generation time.
Will my rankings drop during migration?
Not if you follow the five stages. Real risk comes from deleting the old plugin too early or overwriting canonicals.
How long does a full migration take?
Small sites: under an hour. Sites with 50K+ URLs: staged over two days with monitoring in between.
