ChatGPT Citation Study 2026: Which Domains ChatGPT Cites for 500 SEO Queries
We prompted ChatGPT (GPT-4o with browsing enabled, US persona, temperature 0) with 500 unique SEO-related questions in July 2026 and captured every cited URL. Reddit is now the single most-cited domain for SEO questions (11.4% of citations), overtaking Search Engine Journal (8.9%) and Moz (6.7%). WBP Omni SEO cracked the top 25 with 0.6% share.

Reddit is #1 — even for technical SEO
Reddit accounted for 11.4% of all citations, edging past Search Engine Journal (8.9%) and Moz (6.7%). Reddit was cited on 38.6% of all answers.

First-party product docs get cited disproportionately
Google's own developers.google.com and support.google.com combined for 9.1% of citations — often as the primary source for a claim.

Newer domains break in with strong topical depth
Three domains younger than 3 years appear in the top 30. All three publish long, schema-rich answer pages on a tight topical silo.

YouTube almost never gets cited for SEO
0.4% of citations were YouTube URLs, despite being heavily cited in Google AI Overviews for the same queries.

The remaining 38% is spread across 592 long-tail domains — an opening for niche publishers with tight topical authority.

Methodology
Sample: 500 SEO queries × ChatGPT (GPT-4o + browsing) = 3,247 cited URLs. Published 2026-07-21.
- Queries: 500 SEO questions drawn from Semrush + Google Suggest, filtered to search volume ≥ 30/mo and intent = informational.
- Model: OpenAI GPT-4o via the ChatGPT web app with the built-in browsing tool enabled.
- Persona: fresh Plus account, US IP, no memory, no custom instructions, temperature not tunable in the web app (defaults).
- Each query submitted once; the citations displayed inline (numbered pills) were resolved to their final URLs.
- URLs deduped per response before counting so a source cited twice in one answer is counted once.
- Cited URLs were normalized to registrable domain (public suffix list) for the aggregate ranking.
